Can You Wear Clear Aligners at Work? Here's What Really Happens

Many adults are hesitant to get their teeth straightened. They aren't afraid of the treatment itself, but they imagine themselves in a meeting, giving a presentation, or in an interview with braces visible in their mouth. If this concern is holding you back, here's what I tell patients in my clinic.

The real challenge is still habit, not visibility

Adopting new habits during the workday surprises my patients much more than the appearance of the mouthguards.

• Eating and drinking. You have to remove the mouthguards to consume any liquid other than water. So a business dinner or a coffee break requires a quick detour beforehand to take them out.

• Speaking. Most people notice a slight lisp during the first few days. This sensation usually goes away as soon as the tongue adjusts to the appliance.

• Wearing time. The treatment requires you to keep the aligners in your mouth for about 20 to 22 hours a day to stay on track with the treatment plan. You'll need to learn how to handle them discreetly between meetings.

These tasks become just part of your routine after a week or two.

If someone notices your aligners, a simple answer will do: "I'm using clear aligners—it's really easy." People are usually more curious than critical, and someone you know has probably already gone through the same experience.

My Practical Tips for Professionals

• Keep your case with you. All too often, people accidentally throw away the trays wrapped in a napkin.

• Create routines. Link the act of eating to an existing transition—such as moving from your desk to the kitchen—rather than trying to remember to eat at the exact moment it’s time to eat.

• Pack a travel kit. Put a spare case, your toothbrush, and the cleanser recommended by our team in your bag.
