Retention devices

Which retainer is right for me?

A retainer is used to hold the teeth in a specific position after the end of the mouthpiece treatment.

Your orthodontist will discuss your retainer options at your adjustment appointment. If more than one type of retainer is recommended, your orthodontic team will be able to help you determine which one best suits your lifestyle.

There are two main categories of retention devices:

Fixed

Fixed retainers are permanently attached to the back of the teeth. They cannot be removed for eating or cleaning, and require careful brushing. Fixed retainers are usually bonded to the front teeth.

Essix

Essix retainers are made of transparent plastic. They fit over the entire dental arch and are removable. Essix aligners are similar to Invisalign clear aligners, but are thicker and more rigid, to hold teeth in place and last longer. They can also be worn at night.

Maintenance of retention devices

Retention devices require special care and attention. It's easy to lose them in the laundry or throw them in a sports bag. These simple steps will ensure that your retainer stays clean and in the best possible condition.

1. Always store retainers in their case. This will keep them clean and free from food debris and bacteria.

2. Never wrap a retainer in a paper towel or tissue, as you may forget it or throw it away with the towel or tissue.

3. Never soak your retainer in mouthwash or alcohol. This can deform your retainer or give it a bad taste.

4. Never use hot water or put them in the dryer to clean your retainer. This can alter their shape.

When should I wear my retainer?

At the end of the tray treatment, you will need to wear your retainer for 16 hours a day. After three months, the teeth begin to stabilize and you can start wearing the retainer only at night, or during the day when you're not eating or drinking. Your retainer is designed to hold your teeth in place so that newly displaced teeth don't move.

What happens if I don't wear my retainers?

Teeth shift over time. If you don't wear your retainer, your teeth will eventually shift and your orthodontic treatment will fail. Wearing a retainer after aligners will keep your smile straight and allow you to enjoy the results for years to come.
